Deep Pocket Monster: the millionaire who gives the Pokémon away

Most Pokémon YouTubers open packs and show you what they pulled. Deep Pocket Monster opens packs and gives them away to whoever is watching. That one choice tells you basically everything about Pat Flynn's channel.

Who he is

Pat Flynn was already a success story before he touched a single Pokémon card. He founded Smart Passive Income, one of the longest-running online business brands on the internet, and wrote the playbook a lot of your favorite creators quietly follow. He started Deep Pocket Monster in January 2021, after falling down the Pokémon rabbit hole with his kids, and hit 100,000 subscribers within the first year. The channel has been sitting just shy of 700,000 subscribers, per a recent Kotaku roundup that called him the most interesting PokeTuber working right now.

Here is the twist that makes that interesting. A lot of big channels turn into a rich person having more money than you to spend on the hobby you share. Flynn went the other direction: he was already rich, so the channel's whole deal is kindness and giving back. The collections he buys are usually bought because the person selling them is in trouble and needs the money. The live streams are famous for viewers buying each other memberships and Flynn giving every opening away to random watchers. That is not a bit. That is the channel.

What he makes

The flagship series is the complete-a-set challenge: Flynn tries to complete a whole Pokémon set, usually against a clock or a budget, and the episodes tend to end with the kind of genuine kindness you do not normally get from cardboard content. He also buys entire collections on camera, sorts through the whole thing, and tells you exactly what he paid, which makes his channel one of the most honest windows into what collections are actually worth. Mixed in: deliberately buying the weirdest Pokémon products he can find on eBay and opening them in horror, which is always a good time.

Then there is ShortPocketMonster, his shorts channel, which has blown past 2.1 million subscribers with daily pack openings and now dwarfs the main channel. And in 2026 he put on Card Party, a real in-person Pokémon event, because apparently running one of the biggest Pokémon channels was not enough community building for one man.

Why he is worth watching

If you are tired of content that treats the hobby like a lottery ticket, this is the fix. Flynn's videos are about people first and cardboard second, and the giveaway-first format means his audience shows up generous. For collectors, the collection-buy videos are secretly a masterclass in grading your own stuff before you sell it. For parents getting into Pokémon because of their kids, he is basically the only big creator who came in the same door you did.
