Magic just posted its biggest quarter ever: the crossovers are the growth engine
Magic just posted its biggest quarter ever, and the crossovers are doing the heavy lifting. Hasbro reported Magic sales above $600 million in Q3, a quarterly record for the game, with the Universes Beyond frontlist named as the driver.
The scale is worth sitting with. Magic is now sold in around 40,000 stores, and new-store growth is running near 30 percent. That is not a game coasting on nostalgia. That is a game acquiring customers, according to the earnings call notes.
The next test of the formula arrives November 13 with the Star Trek set. The debut stream on October 20 showed four commander decks built around Picard, Spock, the Borg Queen, and Worf, plus a new modal mechanic called Dilemmas. One mythic enchantment, the Kobayashi Maru Scenario, hands you three turns of escalating choices before it makes you lose the game, which is the most on-theme card design of the year.
There are autographed Kirk, Picard, and Janeway cards in the mix too, per the reveal coverage, which tells you exactly who this set is courting: the lifelong Trekkie who has never shuffled a deck. That is the whole point of the crossover strategy. Every fandom doorway is a new customer the local store never had to recruit.
Not everything is smooth. Beginner boxes for the set were canceled over distribution and production issues, and some commander decks, bundles, and draft night boxes are delayed in certain regions. For a store owner, the beginner box is the onboarding tool, so losing it stings right where growth matters most.
Still, the direction is clear. Prereleases run November 6 through 12, and the Star Trek window is the stocking decision on our shelf. You can check our events page as the date gets closer. The purists will argue about purity. I will take the new regular at the counter every time.
